Managing Learner Anxiety & Behaviour Challenges

Behavioural challenges and anxiety issues in schools are steadily increasing, with last academic year seeing a record number of suspensions and expulsions, 97% of which were SEN learners. In response to this growing concern, our very own Feliciea Jibson joined Simon Ashton, Assistant Principal for Student Experience, and Clare Kirk, Vice Principal and Designated Safeguarding Lead from Nacro Education, in a roundtable discussion on "Managing Learner Anxiety & Behavior Challenges," hosted by Headteacher Chat. And what a dynamic conversation it was, rich with insights and practical strategies.

Key Takeaways:

1. Emphasising Proactivity over Reactivity

Reactivity is our default response to evolving behaviours but why wait for behavioural issues to arise when you can prevent them? By understanding the roots of challenging behaviours, schools can cultivate an environment where issues are addressed before they even begin.

2. Understanding and Addressing Underlying Needs

Behavioural challenges are often just the tip of the iceberg. The underlying issues are deeply rooted in cognitive, social, emotional, and mental health needs. Recognising these factors, identifying triggers and stressors, and addressing them through a person-centred approach are essential steps. It’s about more than just managing behaviour—it’s about nurturing the whole child.

3. The Power of Collaboration

No school is an island. Effective student behaviour management hinges on collaboration whether among school staff, with families, or with external agencies. It enables a comprehensive understanding of our learners, ensures a unified response to their needs, and creates a cohesive, supportive environment that provides consistency and stability for learners.

4. Essential Tips for New Educators

Classroom management can be daunting, especially for those new to the profession. Creating structured, flexible environments that foster strong relationships with learners can go a long way. By being proactive, reflective, and relational, teachers can build classrooms where both students and educators thrive.
